There are many ways to lose weight. Look in any magazine and you will find tips, tricks and success stories galore. The diet industry feeds on your desire to look like a supermodel. Because of this, it is easy to get sucked into one diet fad after another. The truth is there are good ways to lose weight and there are bad ways to lose weight. A good weight loss plan will be one that gives you the tools you need to not only lose the weight, but keep the weight off. A bad weight loss plan will tell you to lose the weight as fast as you can regardless of the long term effects. As someone who has struggled with her weight for many years, I have been on so many diets. I've lost and gained, lost and gained. Here are, in my experience, the 10 worst ways that I have found to lose weight: 1)Fasting. Fasting tricks your body and your mind. First it tricks your body into thinking you are starving yourself. When this happens, your metabolism takes a nosedive. This isn't good because your metabolism is what causes you to burn calories. When you do start eating again, because your metabolism is now lower than normal, you will also burn calories at a slower pace. This usually results in gaining back any weight you may have lost during your fast. Fasting also plays on your mind because immediately after a fast, you may notice a huge difference in your weight when you step on the scale. Most of this, however is water that you have lost, not fat. It is very discouraging to step on the scale a couple of days later and see your weight is right back where it was before your fast. 2)Denying yourself. Losing weight should not be about deprivation. Deprivation leads to binging. If you tell yourself that you cannot ever eat cake or potato chips again, you are going to end up sitting down with an entire cake or an entire bag of chips. So don't deny yourself. By the same token, don't keep those foods in the house where they are easily accessible. That way if you really want them, you will have to go out and get them. 3)Not exercising. Not only will exercise speed up your weight loss, you will feel better mentally and emotionally. This will help you in your weight loss efforts because you will feel more equipped. Exercise also helps keep your muscles toned as you are losing the weight. 4)Drugs. Diet pills, whether over the counter or prescription provide a short term solution for a long term problem. When Ephedra was still on the market, I took them faithfully in my attempt to lose weight. I lost 50 pounds in the process and it seemed effortless. I had to actually remind myself to eat at the end of the day. I felt no hunger and was so energetic from the rush of the pill, I also burned more calories. I also had heart palpitations, and when I heard Ephedra was being removed from store shelves due to health risks, I knew it was for the best that I stop taking it. What happened? I ended up gaining all of the weight back. With Ephedra, I did not learn how to eat properly. I just learned how to drug myself to keep from feeling hungry. 5)Diet programs that require you to purchase their food. These programs work for the duration of time that you are purchasing their food, but unless you plan on buying their food for the rest of your life, losing the weight this way is pointless. Chances are after the weight is lost and you resume eating your own food, you will return to your old way of eating. 6)Skipping breakfast. Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. If you must skip any meal, breakfast is not the one to skip. Eating breakfast will raise your metabolism for the entire day, and you will burn more calories all day long. If you skip breakfast your metabolism goes into starvation mode and when you do eat later in the day, your calories will not burn as quickly or as efficiently. Skipping breakfast also paves the way for binging later on in the day. 7)Not drinking water. If you are trying to lose weight, drinking water will help you in many ways. First of all, it keeps you hydrated. You are less likely to overeat if you are drinking plenty of water. Thirst often disguises itself as hunger and you may eat when you are, in fact, thirsty. Drinking plenty of water also helps keep all of your organs and muscles running more efficiently. 8) Becoming addicted to the number on your scale. The scale can be your best friend or your worst enemy. When you are trying to lose weight, it can be easy to place too much emphasis on what those numbers say. In my weight loss journey, there have been times when I would let the gaining of 1 or 2 pounds put me in a tailspin or a binge as I thought to myself "What's the point of trying anymore? " On the other hand, I have gotten so excited over the loss of 5 pounds that I have stopped being as careful about my food choices. My overconfidence led to a lack of self-control. The scale is a fickle fellow, and can reflect water weight and other things at various times of the month. If you weigh daily, you will pick up on all of these small changes and get frustrated. By weighing only once or twice a month, you will get a truer reflection of how much weight you are really losing. 9)Fad diets. Fad diets are any diet that you cannot do for the rest of your life. Remember the Rice Diet? Can you imagine staying on the Rice Diet for the rest of your life? Of course not. It simply isn't realistic. 10)Setting unrealistic goals. It is important to set goals when you are trying to lose weight, but make sure to set realistic goals. Taking baby steps is key to a successful weight loss journey. Your goals should be realistic, specific with a time for completion. An example of an unrealistic goal would be: I am going to lose 100 pounds. I am going to stop eating so much and going to exercise every day. An example of a realistic goal would be: I am going to lose 1 - 2 pounds a week for the next 2 months. I am going to walk 15 minutes 5 days a week for the first month, and 30 minutes 5 days a week for the second month. Unrealistic goals can seem overwhelming. You are setting yourself up for failure by expecting too much from yourself. By being mindful of these ways NOT to lose weight, you will also become more mindful of ways to be successful in your weight loss journey. |
